The two beams interfere with each other, producing a pattern of light and dark fringes. LIGO\u2019s interferometer works by splitting a laser beam into two perpendicular paths using a beam splitter. These paths are several kilometers long, with mirrors placed at the end of each arm. The laser beams bounce back and forth between the mirrors, travelling a total distance of up to 4 km in each arm before being recombined.<\/p><p><strong>Gravitational Waves: Ripples in Spacetime<\/strong><br \/>When a gravitational wave passes through Earth, it slightly distorts spacetime, causing the distance between the mirrors in LIGO\u2019s arms to change by a minuscule amount\u2014often less than a thousandth of the diameter of a proton. The mirrors, for example, need to be suspended in a way that isolates them from all external noise. LIGO\u2019s mirrors are suspended by quadruple pendulums, which help filter out ground vibrations. The vacuum chambers where the light travels must be one of the most perfect vacuums ever created to prevent any air molecules from scattering the laser beams.<br \/>Moreover, the entire system must remain stable over time to ensure accurate measurements. This requires advanced control systems to keep the mirrors and other components in the correct positions.<\/p><p><strong>India Joins the Hunt: LIGO-India<\/strong><br \/>India is also making its mark in the field of gravitational wave astronomy with the upcoming LIGO-India project. Announced as part of the international network of gravitational wave observatories, LIGO-India will be located in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra. This facility is set to be one of the most advanced scientific instruments ever built in India and will work in tandem with LIGO observatories in the U.S. to increase the accuracy of gravitational wave detection and help pinpoint their sources in the universe.<br \/>LIGO-India\u2019s addition to the global network of interferometers will significantly enhance the ability to triangulate the location of gravitational wave sources, thereby contributing to our understanding of cosmic events such as black hole mergers and neutron star collisions.
